URANQUINTY - THE FRIENDLY VILLAGE!

"What a great place to bring up the kids" - Michael, Uranquinty resident
Uranquinty is a village approximately 15 km south of Wagga Wagga in the Riverina region of New South Wales with a population of around 800 people.  Most residents work in Wagga Wagga and the surrounding district but enjoy the quieter village lifestyle when not at work. Community Groups include the Progress Association, Neighbourhood Centre Committee, Tennis Club, Men's Shed, P&C, Playgroup, Preschool and the Uranquinty Hotel Social Club. Some of the community events include an ANZAC Day Service and March, East versus West Cricket Match, Christmas Concert, Trivia Nights, Monster Garage Sales and Uranquinty is also the home to the Wagga Folk Festival (Long Weekend in October).

Wagga Wagga is the largest inland city in NSW, home to the main campus of Charles Sturt University, Australia's largest inland university, and close to the Kapooka Army Base located on the highway running to Uranquinty.  Uranquinty is part of Wagga Wagga City Council and more information on the local area is available at the City of Wagga Wagga and the Visitor Information Centre

A BRIEF HISTORY OF 'QUINTY
Uranquinty, an unusual name, and a unique place on the map. The village of Uranquinty began, like most other settlements throughout the area, from a need for expansion and settlement of new lands during the 1800s.  Uranquinty is an aboriginal word meaning yellow box tree and plenty of rain. The town itself has had three names.  Initially it was called Glenrouth and proclaimed a village on 22 September 1888 and in 1889 the name changed to Uranquintry  It was officially altered to Uranquinty in 1966, although residents have referred to the last name since the turn of the century.
Today, Uranquinty has a population of around 800. The railway station has long gone, the last station master left in 1984 and the building demolished in 1988. The grain silos closed in 2007 and the old community hall closed. The Neighbourhood Centre was opened in 23rd July 1983 and a new community hall in 2010. The establishment of our memorial, Wirraway Park, is a tribute to all those involved in its
construction and maintenance.
